Cayman Protectors: Opportunities and Challenges
The role of a trust protector is continuing to develop, and has been subject to much discussion on the global stage.
In this STEP lecture on 28 May 2026, James Glover and Jackson Messer from Appleby will provide a practical update on all relevant issues and developments a protector of a Cayman trust needs to be aware of. This will include:
The recent increase in the use of Cayman resident professionals and fiduciary service firms to act as protectors of Cayman trusts, and the opportunity for local fiduciaries to market their services.
The core duties that come with the role of a protector; and the impact of the recent Privy Council X Trusts decision on the powers of a protector of a Cayman trust.
The practical considerations that need to be taken into account by any protector of a Cayman trust, from the drafting of protector powers in trust deeds, potential amendments to current trust deeds, and the ever increasing importance of good record keeping.
After attending this lecture, local fiduciaries will be in a better position to take advantage of the increasing trend for local fiduciaries to be appointed as protectors, and the conversations that need to be had with new and existing clients.
Between them, James and Jackson have almost 20 years of offshore and onshore experience and provide a unique and practical insight into this fast developing area of law.
If there is one STEP lecture that you need to attend in 2026, it will be James and Jacksonβs STEP Lecture, βCayman Protectors: Opportunities and Challengesβ.
